No physical property or product has captured the imagination of human kind about the potential of the new energy era as much as hydrogen. An element well understood itself and as part of lifegiving water it is an element of profound importance to our world yet now better understood for the full potential of its nature. Hydrogen has long been viewed as a suitable replacement for petroleum distillates in driving the world. Instead of carbon emission hydrogen engines produce water vapor and oxygen. Hydrogen has a similar energy density to gasoline to produce motive power.

How is Hydrogen production another circular economic value-added process for Saudi Arabia? It starts with Methane. Methane is produced in very large quantities around the world from many different sources but it is useful to note that Saudi Arabia’s petroleum industry exploration and development produces great quantities as a byproduct. Methane is a very potent GHG and while it is often flared off the release to the atmosphere is highly significant.

Instead, with the green light to proceed some form of capture would provide the “feedstock for a hydrogen industry.” Not the only available feedstock but this is an issue of speeding achievement of Carbon Neutrality through sequestration of the methane (GHG) the Kingdom produces.

Converting Methane to Hydrogen (using heat and pressure) to separate the molecules is a job for Solar Energy. The carbon monoxide produced is a valuable industrial gas and has many applications in industrial uses. By splitting up the methane into its components the Kingdom has turned another waste stream into a value stream for its needs.

Hydrogen is a an extremely useful commodity but requires much special handling due to its inherent flammability. Perhaps better than transporting Hydrogen: its molecular relative Ammonia could be embraced as a nonflammable Hydrogen carrier. Ammonia can be cracked into Hydrogen at the point of combustion and Ammonia is itself a global commodity used for making fertilizer for generations. Ammonia has well established supply and transport chains across the globe.

Ammonia is an industrial feedstock but new technology will allow it to be the “vehicle” for Hydrogen transportation and transformation into the green fuel of the New Energy Era. Saudi Arabia will be on the cutting edge of this new energy era while addressing the policy need to achieve Carbon Neutrality as soon as possible.
